Rosto de Portugal representa a visão de Portugal de Karolin Ott através das pessoas locais que contactou durante os primeiros meses da sua estadia.
Karolin acredita que as pessoas locais são aquelas que constroem o espírito do país. As pessoas têm as suas personalidades, os seus traços de rosto próprios, os seus pensamentos, os seus sonhos ou expectativas, os seus comportamentos, as suas políticas e as suas influências culturais. E isto é, na realidade, tudo o que distingue um país de outro. Assim sendo, a melhor forma de exprimir a face de Portugal é fazendo o retrato das pessoas que vivem aqui.
Para além disso, Karolin Ott sempre se sentiu atraída pelas características indivíduas de cada rosto. É especialmente interessante para ela estar em Portugal que, devido às mais variadas razões históricas, tem uma grande mistura de nações o que, consequentemente, lhe oferece um grande leque de características faciais. Sentiu-se sortuda em encontrar estas surpreendentes diferenças entre as pessoas que retratou. Para evidenciar esta multiplicidade de traços decidiu fazer um programa permitindo que, de uma forma interactiva e divertida, possam mudar os traços dos rostos retratados nas suas pinturas e ter a possibilidade de criar 2,598,156 diferentes tipos de faces.
Face of Portugal represents Karolin Ott's vision of Portugal through the local people that she was in contact during the first months after arriving in Lisbon.
In her opinion, local people are the ones, who are making the spirit of a country. People have their personalities, face features, thoughts, dreams, behaviours, politness and culural background. And this is actually all that distinguish one country from another. Therefore, the best way to express the „face“ of Portugal is to portray the people who live here.
Moreover, Karolin has always been attracted to people’s face features. It is especially interesting here in Portugal, where the nation is a big mixture of different nations, because of the historical reasons. She was lucky to see these surprising differences even among the people that she was in contact with during the first months. And to show this big mixture even more playfully the artist has made an interactive program where one can change different parts of the faces of people painted and create 2,598,156 different faces by doing so.
